Years Between Dates Calculator

Calculate the number of years between any two dates, expressed as complete years with remaining months and days, plus an exact decimal for spreadsheet use.

How to Calculate Years Between Two Dates

Step 1: Identify the earlier and later date — the order of input doesn't matter, the calculator uses the absolute difference.

Step 2: Count the complete years by incrementing the earlier year until adding one more year would exceed the later date.

Step 3: Count the remaining complete months in the leftover period.

Step 4: The remaining days complete the breakdown.

Decimal years = Total Days ÷ 365.25 (accounts for leap years on average).

• Example: March 1, 2015 to September 15, 2026 = 11 years, 6 months, 14 days ≈ 11.5425 decimal years.

Formula

Elapsed = Complete Years + Remaining Months + Remaining Days Decimal Years = Total Days ÷ 365.25

Example:

Jan 1, 2010 → Jan 1, 2026 = 16 years exactly = 5844 days ÷ 365.25 = 15.9945 decimal years
