How to Calculate a Weighted Grade

A weighted grade gives each assignment a different level of importance based on its weight. A midterm worth 30% counts three times as much as a quiz worth 10%. To find your weighted average, multiply each grade by its weight, add the results together, then divide by the total weight.

Formula

Weighted Grade = (w₁ × g₁ + w₂ × g₂ + ...) ÷ (w₁ + w₂ + ...)

Example:

Math 80% (weight 30) + Biology 90% (weight 50) + History 72% (weight 20)

= (30×80 + 50×90 + 20×72) ÷ (30+50+20) = 8340 ÷ 100 = 83.40 → B

Grade Types Explained

Percentage mode — enter each grade as a number between 0 and 100 and each weight as the percentage it represents in your overall grade. Weights should add up to 100 if you want to see your complete average, but the calculator works with any partial set of grades too.

Letters mode — choose a letter grade from the dropdown for each course and enter the credit hours (or any relative weight) in the Weight column. The calculator converts each letter to its GPA value and returns a weighted GPA and the matching letter grade.

Points mode — enter the raw points you earned and the maximum possible points for each item. The calculator sums all points, divides by the total maximum, and converts the resulting percentage to a letter grade.
