Final Grade Calculator

Find out what score you need on your final exam to reach your target grade. Enter your current grade, the grade you want to finish with, and how much the final exam is worth — the calculator gives you the minimum score required.

How to Calculate the Final Grade Needed

Your overall course grade is typically a weighted average of your current grade and your final exam score. If you know the two weights, you can work backwards to find the exact final exam score that produces your target grade.

The formula assumes your current grade covers (100 − Final Exam Weight)% of the total, and the final exam covers the remaining Final Exam Weight%.

Formula

Final needed = (Target − Current × (100 − Weight) ÷ 100) ÷ (Weight ÷ 100)

Example:

Current grade 82%, target 85%, final exam worth 25%

= (85 − 82 × 75 ÷ 100) ÷ (25 ÷ 100) = (85 − 61.5) ÷ 0.25 = 94.00%

What the Result Means

If the result is between 0 and 100, you have a clear target to aim for on your final exam. A result above 100 means your target grade is no longer reachable through the final exam alone — you would need extra credit or a grading curve to close the gap. A negative result means your current grade is already high enough that even a zero on the final would not pull you below your target.
